Before founding Emerald Hill in 2005, Eugene served as Director of Private Equity at the University of Chicago Endowment and was responsible for managing its private equity and venture capital portfolio.
Prior to this, he spent five years at Morgan Stanley. He joined the Singapore office in 1997 to head the firm's Asia Energy equity research team, where he covered over 20 public companies across Asia, and subsequently transferred to the San Francisco office to manage investments for foundations and ultra-high net worth families. Previously, he spent eight years as a management consultant for Andersen Consulting (now Accenture), Deloitte Consulting and Booz•Allen & Hamilton.
Eugene earned an MBA in Finance and Statistics from the University of Chicago in 1993 and a BS in Management and Management Information Systems from the University of Connecticut in 1988.

Michael B. Smith
Partner & CFO
Before joining Emerald Hill in 2007, Michael was Managing Director for Private Equity at the University of Pennsylvania Endowment and was responsible for developing and implementing the global private equity strategy.
Prior to this, he spent 8 years at the Qwest Asset Management Company, first as Manager of Corporate Strategy and then as Vice President of Alternative Investments, where he shared leadership responsibility for private equity, hedge funds, special situations and real estate investments. Previously, he held various investment banking, tax and accounting positions at SKBCORBOY & Shenkin Kurtz Baker & CO, Safesport Manufacturing Co. / BACE Industries and Ernst & Young.
Michael holds a Masters in Taxation from the University of Denver and a BS in Accounting from Metropolitan State College. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst (2001) and a Certified Public Accountant (1990, inactive).
